The reason why you can detect these areas is that wet parts of your roof will retain heat longer than the dry parts.
Water can cause a lot of different issues in a building. If wood is exposed to it, it could start to rot, or it could attract wood boring insects. Metal parts of your roof could start to rust and cause structural integrity issues. Wet insulation will not work as well as an insulator.
If you suspect that you have a problem with water leaking in through your roof, make sure you have your roof scanned as soon as possible.
